Rest Isn’t Weakness...It’s How I Learned to Stay in the Game

There was a time when rest felt like quitting.

I didn’t say that out loud, but it lived quietly in my thoughts.
Rest meant falling behind.
Rest meant letting people down.
Rest meant admitting I couldn’t keep up with the life I once managed without thinking.

So I pushed.

I pushed through exhaustion.
Through pain that whispered at first, then demanded attention.
Through days when my body begged for mercy and my mind told me to prove something instead.

I remember sitting on the couch one evening with my family—everyone relaxed, talking, laughing. I was there physically, but inside I was calculating what still needed to be done. What I should have more energy for. What I was failing at by needing to sit instead of move.

That moment stayed with me.

Not because I was resting but because I couldn’t let myself be at peace while I was.

Here’s the truth I had to learn the hard way:
Pushing didn’t make me stronger. It made me sicker.

Living with autoimmune disease stripped away the illusion that rest was optional. My body didn’t ask politely. It forced a reckoning.

Rest, I learned, isn’t about stopping life.
It’s about staying in it.

Recovery isn’t loud.
It doesn’t announce itself.
It often goes unnoticed by the world but not by your body.

It looks like choosing fewer plans so you can be present for the ones that matter.
It looks like saying no before resentment sets in.
It looks like honoring the season you’re in instead of shaming yourself for not being who you used to be.

For a long time, I believed rest was something you earned only after everything else was done.
But the truth is, everything else costs more when you’re already depleted.

I didn’t lose my strength when I rested.
I found it.

Rest isn’t weakness. It’s recovery.
And sometimes, it’s the bravest choice you can make.
