Rest Taught Me Where My Boundaries Were Missing

Rest Taught Me Where My Boundaries Were Missing

Slowing down showed me something I wasn’t prepared for.

It wasn’t just that my body needed more rest.
It was that my life had been built as if it didn’t.

When I finally stopped pushing, I could see it clearly.
I wasn’t just tired because of autoimmune disease.
I was exhausted because I had no boundaries protecting my energy.

I had gotten used to saying yes when my body was saying no.
To plans.
To expectations.
To conversations that drained me more than they supported me.

And when I started slowing down, all of that became impossible to ignore.

Boundaries didn’t come naturally to me. They felt uncomfortable. Awkward. Like I was disappointing people or making things harder than they needed to be. But what I’ve learned living with autoimmune disease is this:

If you don’t choose your boundaries, your body will choose them for you.

I remember days when I pushed through anyway. When I ignored the signals. When I told myself I could rest later. And later always came louder. More pain. More fatigue. More canceled plans.

Rest made it clear that boundaries weren’t about control. They were about care.

Care for my body.
Care for my nervous system.

Care for the life I wanted to keep showing up for.

Boundaries started small.
Leaving earlier than planned.
Saying “I’ll let you know” instead of committing right away.
Letting myself change my mind on pain days without explaining everything.

What surprised me most was this:
Boundaries didn’t shrink my life.
They steadied it.

They gave me room to manage flares without guilt.
To rest without apology.
To stop measuring my worth by how much I could give.

If slowing down has started to reveal where your energy leaks are, you’re not doing it wrong.

You’re learning what your body needs in order to live with this—day by day, flare by flare.

And that’s not weakness.
That’s wisdom earned.

A Gentle Invitation

If this resonates, you don’t have to navigate boundaries alone.

If you’re craving steadiness instead of constant adjustment, I’ve created a few ways to stay connected, each one meeting you where you are.
