What I’m Letting Go of Before Spring Begins

What I’m Letting Go of Before Spring Begins

Last week, after the blizzard melted and the sun finally stayed out past dinner, I stood in my kitchen looking at my planner.

March always used to mean momentum.

I would start filling in dates.
Projects.
Appointments.
Things I had put off all winter.

There was a time when I equated a full calendar with proof that I was okay.

If I could keep up, I was winning.
If I could do more, I was back.

But this year, as I looked at those open spaces on the page, I felt something different.

I felt hesitation.

Not fear.
Not laziness.
Just a quiet awareness that I don’t want to build my life the way I used to.

Living with autoimmune disease has taught me that what I carry into a season matters just as much as what I plan inside it.

And if I’m honest, there are things I’ve been carrying that don’t belong in spring.

I’ve been carrying the belief that I should feel better by now.

I’ve been carrying the pressure to prove that the last flare didn’t slow me down.

I’ve been carrying the old voice that says, “You’re behind.”

That voice sounds productive.
It sounds responsible.
It even sounds strong.

But it isn’t kind.

So before I fill in a single new commitment this month, I’m choosing to let a few things go.

I’m letting go of the need to catch up.

I’m letting go of comparing this year’s energy to who I was five years ago.

I’m letting go of the idea that growth has to look visible to count.

Because here’s what I know now.

Letting go is not weakness.

It’s preparation.

You cannot build rhythm on top of resentment.

You cannot create steadiness while still arguing with your body.

Spring is not just about blooming.

It’s about clearing.

Clearing the expectations that don’t fit anymore.
Clearing the guilt that winter survival created.
Clearing the belief that productivity equals worth.

And here is the truth I am learning slowly.

The more I release, the lighter my steps feel.

The less I prove, the more peace I experience.

The less I push, the more sustainable my energy becomes.

March is not asking me to prove anything.

It’s asking me to prepare honestly.

To notice what I am still gripping.

To decide what I no longer need.

To choose a rhythm that respects who I am now — not who I used to be.

If you’re standing in front of your own planner this month, wondering why you don’t feel as ready as you thought you would…

Maybe nothing is wrong.

Maybe you’re just being invited to release before you rebuild.

Because blooming doesn’t begin with doing more.

It begins with letting go of what no longer fits.

One choice.
One release.
One breath at a time.

No pressure. No expectations.
Just space to listen, notice, and move at your own pace.

One flare.
One breath at a time.
